Post-Secondary Opportunities

YouthBuild is a pre-apprenticeship program certified by the state and facilitated at South Seattle College’s Georgetown Campus. Participants earn a weekly stipend while studying for their high school diploma or equivalent, gain skills needed to join the workforce, and give back to the community by building tiny houses for the Low Income Housing Institute. Students graduate each year with six industry certifications and thirty-eight college credits. After graduating, participants receive nine months of follow-up support, including case management, resume and interview tips, and job placement assistance.

ANEW offers high-quality, pre-apprenticeship training programs that help individuals obtain careers in construction trades. We partner with many registered apprenticeship programs in the Seattle area and expose students directly to their training facilities. These training partners explain their industry, teach technical and math-related lessons, and emphasize the importance of fitness.

City Year brings together diverse, talented teams of young adults to serve in high-need schools across the country, where they support students, teachers, and schools all day, every day. City Year AmeriCorps members build strong, “near-peer” relationships with students and provide academic and social-emotional support, while serving as essential resources to the school to boost student learning and achievement. Through their work in schools and communities, City Year AmeriCorps members not only make a difference in the lives of students they serve, but also acquire valuable skills that prepare them to become the next generation of civically-engaged leaders.

Have you been homeless? Do you want to continue your education or start a career in a trade? The Passport to Careers program can assist you on your journey toward a postsecondary education or apprenticeship. It provides financial assistance and support services, if you meet the following criteria:

• Homeless or in Foster Care: You experienced unaccompanied homelessness (without a parent or guardian) during the prior school year, or were in the care of the Washington State, tribal, or federal foster care system. (See chart at right for eligibility dates.)
• State Resident: You are a resident of Washington, or your case is based in Washington State.

Eligible Student:

• You are or will be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible institution of higher education or a recognized pre-apprenticeship or registered apprenticeship program in Washington before turning 22.
•  You are not planning to pursue a degree in theology.
• You have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree.

Year Up is a leadership and professional development program that combines hands-on, college-level learning with a six-month corporate internship at top companies in the Greater Seattle area. Year Up prepares low-income young adults for a career in Information Technology and provides an opportunity to further your education. After a year of intensive, hands-on training, more than 85% of graduates from Year Up have either a full-time job paying an average of $19 hour or are enrolled in college full-time.
