The counselors and IB Coordinaor walk through options available to MRHS 11th and 12th grade students.
Registration
While there are many parts to registration, we are hoping that the below tabs help provide the information you need to successfully register for classes for the upcoming school year. If you are not yet a MRHS student, be sure to start at the Enrollment Tab.
If you are a current MRHS student, be sure you are checking StudentVue Course History to know what class categories you need to meet for graduation.
Course Registration Forms are updated Annually.
Registration for the 24-25 school year will begin in February 2024. Prior to students completing their registration forms, there will be Advisory Lessons. Counselors then meet 1-1 with student to confirm their course registration.

- Math pathway for 9th and 10th grade students: We will now have MYP Math 4 and MYP Math 5. This two year sequence covers Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. It is intended to prepare students for IB Math in 11th grade.
- PSSC now has an ONLINE application. Their application closes March 8th. Please visit their site for details.
Key resources that will be helpful for registration:
A final note about applying to PSSC and Running Start - the registration form walks through your next steps. You will also complete the MRHS registration request form.
Credit Information
In order to graduate, a full 24 credits are needed. Credits demonstrate that a student has passed a class. Counselors think of courses as either Yearlong or Semester. For 2020-2021, a semester and a quarter are worth the same number of credits.
Length of Course | Amount of Credits Earned |
Semester/Quarter | .5 |
Yearlong | 1.0 |
Advisory | .25 |

Course Catalog/Course Descriptions
Our Course Catalog allows students and families to read more about the different classes offered at Mount Rainier. This page is arranged by the various content areas with descriptions that pop up when you hover over the course name. You can search by content area to find out more about our classes.
To learn more about our classes, we also have a video library. While we try our best to have this library updated with current courses, not all courses are guaranteed to be available every year. Unfortunately we do not have all courses with video descriptions but we have tried to get a majority. In this collection of videos, our staff share about what you learn in each course. The courses are named by "content area_Course name" (for example - Art_Ceramics 1).
9th Grade Registration Tips
As a 9th grader, you are entering into high school. At MRHS, you will be taking courses that prepare you for the IB Program and help build your critical thinking skills. When picking your classes remember:
- Starting with the 2022-2023 school year, all 9th graders will take MYP Math 4. This is a part of a two year sequence to cover Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 content. This will prepare you for IB Math in 11th grade.
- You will be taking a World Language in 9th and 10th grade. You will take two years of the same language.
- Currently we offer: Spanish, Heritage Spanish (if you understand/speak Spanish at home), and French.
- Whatever you take will help meet needed credit requirements.
- We do recommend taking a PE or Fine Arts course since those categories can be more difficult to meet later on.
- Students can start planning for their 11th grade courses by looking under the Program Options tab.
Learn more about joining the MRHS 'Ramily' by joining us at Future Ram Night.
Counselors will be working with our feeder schools to register for 9th grade classes and will be hosting family sessions for students that are new to our district in late spring.
10th Grade Registration Tips
For our 10th graders, there is a lot of continuation from 9th grade.
- Starting in 2022-2023, the math sequence will be MYP Math 4 (9th grade), followed by MYP Math 5 (10th grade).
- This two year sequence prepares students for IB Math in junior year and covers Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
- Continue with your current World Language to get your second year. While you need 2 credits of World Language for graduation, many 4 year colleges/universities want 3 years of the same language.
- Students can start planning for their 11th grade courses by looking at the Program Options tab. Some considerations include:
- If a student is interested in Running Start, they might want to get PE out of the way.
- If a student is interested in PSSC, they might want to make sure they have at least 1.0 Fine Arts Credit.
- If a student is interested in the Full IB Diploma, they want to ensure that they have completed MYP Math 5 by the end of 10th grade.
- If you have not yet gotten your health credit, you will likely Health as a 10th grade student.
11th Grade Registration Tips
When registering for 11th grade courses, students have more options in terms of their program. Each program has its benefits and there is not a correct pathway. As a student, work to identify what challenges you are ready for and see if there is a program that will help you on the path to the future you choose.

IB Diploma Programme
Students going for the full International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program have specific requirements that they need to meet for graduation. The IB Diploma Program is recognized internationally for its rigor.
- Students need to join the IB Diploma Program going into Junior year to meet all needed program requirements.
- Students do best in the IB Diploma Program if they are highly motivated, and comfortable asking for help.
- Students can earn college credit through their performance on the IB Exams.
